Rebuilding from Ashes: Lutsen Lodge Resort fire

In a tragic turn of events, the main building at the historic Lutsen Lodge Resort fire succumbed to an overnight fire, leaving behind a legacy in ashes. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office received a fire alarm notification at 12:24 a.m. on Tuesday, plunging the beloved resort into a nightmarish scenario.

A Historic Landmark in Ruins

Situated at 5700 W. Highway 61, Lutsen Lodge has been a go-to destination for skiers and hikers. The resort staff reported smoke emanating from the lobby area, prompting the swift response of multiple fire departments. Unfortunately, the efforts were in vain, as the flames engulfed the entire building. Miraculously, no guests were present during the incident, and no injuries were reported.

Unraveling the Mystery: Investigation Underway

As the embers settled, the State Fire Marshal investigated the cause of this devastating fire. The historic Lutsen Lodge, which had witnessed two previous fires in 1949 and 1951, now faced its third blaze in 2024. The Lutsen Resort shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, acknowledging the loss of the lodge building and expressing a commitment to rebuilding stronger.

The Historic Lutsen Lodge has been taken by a devastating fire this evening… A total loss to the lodge building… Fires in 1949, 1951, and 2024. The amazing memories made here are in our hearts as we begin the heavily weighted process to rebuild back better,” the post lamented.

Change in Ownership: A Shift in Legacy

Adding to the saga, the resort changed ownership in 2018. Scott Harrison and Nancy Burns, the stewards of Lutsen Lodge for 30 years, passed the torch to the North Shore Resort Company. Owned by Bryce Campbell and his mother, Sheila, the family company inherited a resort and a piece of Minnesota’s history.

From Swedish Homestead to Oldest Lutsen Lodge Resort fire

Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrant Charles Axel Nelson, the Lutsen Resort holds the esteemed title of being the state’s oldest. Nelson’s homestead overlooking the lake eventually became the iconic Lutsen, synonymous with history, adventure, and cherished memories.

In the face of this tragedy, the resilience of Lutsen Lodge Resort shines through. The echoes of its past fires resonate with the commitment to rebuild, fostering hope for a new chapter in its storied existence.
